Tom and Jerry Ingredients
Our Tom and Jerry recipe consists of the following ingredients – we always attempt to include substitutes where it is possible:
How to make a Tom and Jerry
-
1Take the eggs and remove their shells – since this wouldn't be too appetising. Next you'll need to carefully separate the white from the yellow.
-
2Place the egg whites into a bowl and whisk until the mixture is frothy. This shouldn't take too long, depending on your passion.
-
3Add the powdered sugar to the egg yolks. Continue to whisk the mixture for a few more seconds to ensure the sugar is nicely mixed in.
-
4Add half of the brandy to the egg yolk mixture. Then whisk until it turns a nice yellow colour – much like a lemon.
-
5Fold the egg whites into the egg yolks. You may be confused at this point – but folding is a simple technique of just lightly turning the mixture without whisking, or any other vivacious methods.
-
6You should now have a nicely mixed bowl of ingredients. Place this bowl into the fridge for the meantime.
-
7Take a saucepan out of your cupboard, and heat the milk. You'll need to ensure that the milk does not begin to boil. Reduce the heat once the milk is hot, so that the heat is retained.
-
8In your prepared mug – which should ideally be warmed up beforehand, add the other half of the brandy. Add half of the egg mixture into the mug, along with the hot milk, and begin to stir it. Then add the other half of the mixture into the glass, which will sit on top of the mug, followed by a sprinkle of the nutmeg. Voila!

Upon first hearing this cocktail's name, the common association is a hopeless yet unfortunate cat, and a cunning and cheeky mouse. Fortunately there are no tails and whiskers in the Tom and Jerry cocktail. This cocktail is a common Christmas cocktail served in the United States. If you like Eggnog, then this is a cocktail that will probably be to your taste, since they are both very similar.
Since this is a Christmastime cocktail, it is usually served warm in a mug. In that sense, the Tom and Jerry cocktail can be considered to have similarities to coffee, rather than a cocktail. It also contains an abundance of hot milk, which definitely helps to reinforce its similarity with coffee – and in particular a latte or a cappuccino.
Interestingly, this cocktail has no associations with the MGM cartoon, Tom and Jerry, but instead relates to the name of its creator's book – Pierce Egan, which was written in 1821.
Many of the Tom and Jerry recipes do not quantify the amount of brandy one should add, and whilst you're free to experiment, the usual amount of brandy is somewhere around 30ml (~1 US fluid ounce) per mug.
